Our History

The Institute of the Franciscans Of St. Mary Of The Angels, was founded in 1871 by Fr. Chrysostom O.F.M. ( Ferdinand Potton ) and Sr. M. Chrysostom of the Cross (Caroline Rurange). They founded the Institute at the request of Msgr. Emile Freppel, the Bishop of Angers, in order to take care of the orphans, victims of the Franco- Prussian war.

The Founders chose the name of St. Mary Of The Angels because St. Francis of Assisi honoured the Virgin Mary under this title and made the sanctuary of the Portiuncula the cradle of his Order. It is affiliated to the Third Order Regular of St. Francis of Assisi, and it is a Religious Institute of the Pontifical Right.

The Mission activities of our Institute are spread to France, England, India, Ethiopia Brazil and Tanzania. In 1892, the Sisters arrived at Mhow, Indore district, Madhya Pradesh. They began their mission work by starting a needle work centre for the poor women of the area. Later on, seeing the need of education, they started an English medium school followed by a Hindi medium school and hostel for girls.

The FSMA Novitiate in India was established at Mhow in 1949. As the number of Indian sisters and missionary enterprises increased, the FSMA mission in India became a province of the Congregation in 1967. The further growth of the province necessitated its bifurcation into Mhow Province and Jaipur Province, each with its own Provincial Council and Novitiate.
